Unemployment Life

Things Unemployment Gives Me Time For:

1) Remembering to floss regularly.

2) Less rushed showers. (Still some rushing. I do have a three year old with a large curiosity streak and penchant for destruction.)

3) Daytime TV. (I haven't missed anything there. Giving up on that immediately.)

4) Googling myself. (Just as potential employers would. Hi potential employers!)

5) Looking for jobs. (So obvious I forgot to list it first.)

6) Revamping my resume. (Brand new spiffy format.)

7) Taking Nate to the library. (That plan got rained out today. Going to try again on Wednesday.)

8) Taking Nate to the spray park/playground.

9) Assuaging some of the guilt I've felt about working Nate's first three years. (Spoiler alert: he's fine and well-adjusted and misses his babysitter.)

10) Cooking meals that take more than 45 minutes. (Tomorrow: Mexican Turkey Meatloaf!)

11) Assembling perspective.

12) Improving my mood. (It's been noted that I'm in a better mood unemployed than I was employed. That certainly speaks volumes.)

13) Reading! (Currently reading: Four of a Kind  - by which I mean I started it this morning and will probably finish tonight.)

14) Sleeping. Nate slept until 8am yesterday and today. That's unheard of and felt incredible. I actually got up before him yesterday (because I had a headache), which I don't think I've done since ... um.... ever? I don't remember. I also took a nap with him yesterday. Heavenly.

15) Spending time with my neglected husband. We're up to the first Matt Smith season of Doctor Who  and have been spending the kind of time talking we did before we were married.

Things I'm not doing:

1) Checking my work email. (Obviously, because I'm now locked out of it.) It's depressing how often I checked it even when I didn't want to.

2) Over-scheduling my days. This week was supposed to be my vacation. I need the downtime. I'm on the job hunt (see 5 & 6 above) but I'm not spending my whole day on it (see everything else above). I don't feel a need to DO ALL THE THINGS every day.

3) Checking Twitter. I'm peeking here and there but I'm not really on there.

4) Wearing khakis.

5) Wearing mascara (mostly because the only places I've been are the spray park and my living room).

Things I'm looking forward to:

1) Cleaning!! Rather than going through all of Nate's toys and executively deciding what goes/stays, I think I'm going to ask him to help. That probably means nothing will get thrown out, but I'm going to try. I'm also going to aim for some kind of order since his toys are currently out of control.

2) Finishing my thesis. More on that another day but I need to start revising soon. Must get that thing done.

3) Not having to do all the chores at night or on the weekend. It'll be a nice change for a while.

4) So. Much. More. Reading. I figured out how to borrow eBooks from the library. Life changer.

5) Finding a new job - someplace I will be excited to join. Someplace I'll feel useful and needed. Someplace I'll feel valued. Someplace I'll start building the next phase of my professional academic life.
